Golden October, golden autumn time!

Coburg’s wonderful (but always underestimated) Hofgarten invites you to linger and enjoy the atmosphere. The park begins at the Schlossplatz, right by the Ehrenburg and the arcades. For those who hike through it, it „stretches“ up to the Veste Coburg and, especially in autumn, offers wonderful distant views of the Gleichberge mountains and Callenberg Castle, as well as great views of the flora and fauna that have been brought here. The history of this park, by the way, goes way back into the 17th century.

It is a unique experience to walk through this generously laid out park. For the older ones among us, this can be done easily by first taking the „GeckoBahn“ up the fortress hill in a steady climb. For the more athletic among us, this works happily the other way round. The various paths lead through areas with unobstructed views, but also through dense, cultivated forest with individual tree plantings of various kinds. History of the Coburg „pleasure garden“, beginning in the 17th century

Duke Albrecht of Coburg was probably the first to have a large garden laid out at the foot of the fortress hill. The aim around 1680 was to manifest a gentleman’s garden in the style of the Dutch to the budding royal city. Justinus Bieler, a Saalfeld native, planned this „pleasure garden“, which extended between the two garden pavilions and the small Coburg rose garden. The hillside garden was terraced and geometrically divided. A two-metre high wall separated the gardens from the public.

Complete reconstruction in the 19th century

Between 1832 and 1837, court gardener Carl Gustav Zeißig initiated the extension of the Coburg Hofgarten (Court Garden) towards the west. At the same time, architectural work on the palace square and the arcades was completed. Duke Ernst II had acquired some plots of land below the Veste, which were integrated into the project. By 1858, the pleasure garden had been transformed into an English landscape park. This was done with the orientation from the palace square up to the Veste Coburg. In the following years, many buildings were added to the park.

The 20th century

Many Coburg residents appreciate the path through the Coburg Hofgarten up to the Natural History Museum, which blends pleasantly into the overall design. A visit is easy to fit in during walks and it’s fun to take time with young and old to see the various exhibitions and activities.

Brand new in the 21st century

In 2007, the artist David Nash erected the sculpture „Noon Column“, which he had created for the international sculpture trail celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the Bamberg diocese. Every day at noon – in summer at 13:20 and in winter at 12:20 – the tree stump lets a light shine due to a slit in its shadow. Times of the zodiac refer to the course of the year on the sides of the sculpture.
